The organized hunting tourism in the Republic of Bulgaria is carried out after contracting between the National Forestry Board subdivisions, responsible for game management, on one hand, and direct clients – hunters or touring agencies, on the other.
When arriving at the airport the foreign guest must present the Customs authorities 2 documents:
- Permit to carry a sporting piece, issued in the country of permanent residence;
- Document certifying the right for hunting, issued in the country of permanent residence.
Foreign hunters are welcomed at a Bulgarian airport or at a certain border inspection point by an agent of the touring agency, that has signed the contract, or by a representative of the Game Breeding Station, where the hunting is going to take place. The transfer from the airport to the Station is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the contract for the organized hunting tourism by the touring agency or by the Game Breeding Station if requested. An interpreter, provided by the touring agency or the Game Breeding Station, is at disposal to accompany hunters.
The Director of the Station or a delegated person issues hunting certificates for foreign hunters (in a format approved by NFB) or permits for hunting. The fee for the permission is set by the Council of Ministers and is indicated in a price-list for an organized hunting tourism. It is covered in Euro by the foreign hunters taking into account the exchange rate for the respective day.
The entities responsible for the game management may offer package prices for hunting of predators, approved by NFB. Package prices may be offered for hunting for magpie, hooded crow, rook and European starling.
The obtained trophies for red deer, fallow deer and roe deer are paid on the basis of weight and are measured 24 hours after boiling them up and cleaning. A provisional record is then drawn up, which includes date, time of shooting and trophy weight. When doing the CIC evaluation, red deer trophy weight should be reduced by 700 grams and fallow deer trophy weight – with 250 grams.
- In case the trophies are measured before the expiration of this 24 hour period, the trophy weight shall be reduced by 5% for humidity.
- Final measurements and evaluation of the trophies are carried out by Evaluation Commissions under the Regional Forestry Boards on the basis of weights recorded in the provisional record.
- The evaluation of the trophies is carried out at the Game Breeding Station or at the headquarters of the relevant Commission depending on the hunter’s request.
- The State Game Breeding Station guarantees 15% accuracy in shooting the required except for the wild boar trophies. If there is a difference exceeding these 15%, the case is dealt with by the National Evaluation Commission.
- The weight of the obtained trophies for red deer with more than 230 CIC points and for fallow deer with more than 200 CIC points is reduced by 10% in the evaluation record, since the required 3 month period after shooting has not expired.
- National and world record holding trophies must remain within the territory of Bulgaria and the hunter is obliged to pay 30% of their actual price. Hunter who has obtained such trophy receives a free replica trophy if possible to produce one.
- The obtained trophies are stamped and sealed by the Evaluation Commission.
- If hunters do not shoot at all throughout the shooting day, the organized battue is free of charge. Every shot missing the target is free of charge too, but should be recorded in the payment protocol.
- Hunters pay the value of the game shot and the services used in Euro. If paying in other currency, the total sum is calculated in Euro taking into account the exchange rate of the Bulgarian National Bank for the respective date.
The State Game Breeding Station provides all necessary export documents for the trophies obtained. These are:
- evaluation record, issued by a Trophy Evaluation Commission;
- payment protocol, certified by the National or Regional Trophy Evaluation Commission;
- veterinary permission issued by the National Veterinary Service or its regional subdivisions
- veterinary certificate;
