State Game Breeding Station “VITOSHKO-STUDENA” is situated on the southwestern slopes of the Vitosha Mountain which are undulating at lower altitudes but with a distinctive sub alpine character in the upper reaches. Its total area is 19,850 ha of which 12,595 ha are covered by forests. The average altitude is 1,350 m. The vast plateaus are typical of this region. The natural deciduous forests include beech, Turkey oak, sessile oak, hornbeam, birch, lime, poplar, wild cherry and others. The common coniferous species are Scots and Austrian pine and at higher altitudes - spruce, white fir and mountain pine. The Station territory is inhabited by RED DEER, FALLOW DEER, ROE DEER, WILD BOAR, MOUFLON, BROWN BEAR, YAK, HARE, WOLF, FOX, BEECH MARTEN, WILD CAT, BADGER and OTTER. Five rivers flowing through the territory of the Station have been stocked with Balkan trout in their upper streams. The rainbow trout is common for the middle and lower streams. The nearby Studena dam lake has been intensively stocked with carp, goldfish and chub. Mountain barbel and trout can be found in the river outflows.
